conflict

Do you ever feel like it’s a struggle to be creative?

I do. Regularly. And I don’t think admitting that makes me any less of a creative person. I’d even go so far as to say it’s the people who struggle with it who are the most creative.

The struggle is where growth happens.

We become refined in the fire.

In many ways, the conflict is the story.

I’ve been thinking about that lately, about the many good things as well as the difficult things in my life and where I’m allowing them to lead me.

Sure, we want life to be easy, for everything to go our way, but, as the Rolling Stones pointed out, you can’t always get what you want. And, like it or not, I believe that’s usually for the best.

There will (and should) always remain that conflict between our wants and our needs and while it’s often uncomfortable, it’s that very conflict that takes us deeper into a more rich and full life experience. It creates within is appreciation, wisdom, and empathy.

Conflict doesn’t just make us better creatives, it makes us better humans.

If you do find yourself struggling with creativity or struggling to be more creative, I’ve got an article for you from one of my favorite authors who writes about writing, K.M. Weiland. Though the post is written primarily for writers, I think creatives of all walks will find something beneficial within.

Weiland covers the need to examine where we’re spending our energy, how to look for sources of resistance, and different ways we can repair or sustain our creativity.
