an introduction
I really love board games.
I don’t love all games equally, but I do love playing a wide variety of them. I also love the many, varied parts that go into creating games—all those moving pieces.
I'm not entirely sure how true this is, but, on a given day, I love designing games just as much as I love playing them, sometimes more. There's something I find incredibly fulfilling about the whole process. I'm sure I can (and will) go on and on about that.
Although I've been designing games for a few years now, I've yet to get one published. I do have something in the works right now, maybe even for this year. And there's the other thing--I'll talk about it shortly.
As far as not yet being published, there are many reasons for this, perhaps the biggest being that I haven't tried very hard at making it happen.
Another reason: as much as I love the many aspects board game design, I feel like it is only lately that I have really kicked this pursuit into gear and made it more of a priority. Blame this sudden change on the pandemic (hey, might as well).
Here's the scoop: about the time when people around the US started getting orders to stay home, I had this crazy idea to just create a bunch of simple family-oriented games and make them available for free as print-and-plays. I got Andrew Bosley on board to do the artwork and host them on his site (it totally legitimizes them).
While the first game, Tooth & Talon came about quite swiftly, the continuing process has been a bit slower than expected.
It seems like any creative endeavor goes that way, so it shouldn't be a surprise to me, but it always is. Even the simplest of games takes time to fully develop. Still, I'm enjoying the whole thing and learning tons.
Now you know the backstory. And you're still here. Amazing.
Since I'm spending a lot more time designing games, I'm going to start sharing all the stuff I find interesting about it. There may even be videos. No promises.
Maybe one day people will look back on this and think: who was that guy anyhow? Or maybe this is a turning point right before I go off the rails. God only knows.
Hopefully it's a fun ride either way.
