in the midst of it
I don’t write often about current events, but seeing as we’re all smack-dab in the middle of a global crisis, it seemed like a good time to do so. I’ll keep it brief.
There is so much to be said about our current state of affairs with Coronavirus COVID-19. Indeed, so much has already been said. It seems like life has been turned upside down and that our means of navigating it has had to change from day to day.
Personally, not too much has changed yet when it comes to my regular lifestyle. I was already working from home and our kids aren’t in school yet. However, it has definitely altered my mindset. And it seems like things are still ramping up.
Two things have struck me:
First, that this may be the first time in history where every single person in the developed world is thinking about the same thing. That this is so big may be cause for concern, but I also find it unifying.
The second is just how impressed I am with the love, care, and creativity I’ve seen others put on display during this time. It’s truly remarkable.
Whether it’s reworking showtunes into songs about the virus, police pausing during their patrol to entertain local residents stuck in their homes, local repairmen (and women) going around offering home maintenance, parents spending newfound time working on projects with their kids (like building a lego robot), and even companies giving freely of their services to help address the needs of others.
Yes, there is and will be a time for grieving and heartache over our losses, but I also see so much beauty being shown by caring souls.
All this so say: thanks people for being your creative, wonderful selves. Please continue to live in love instead of fear—to give instead of grasp. When we use our creativity to help others more than ourselves, it’s always worth it.
And if you need someone to talk with—about anything at all—please don't hesitate to reach out to me.
